Cost-Effective FSMA Compliance.

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), signed into law in 2011, was the most sweeping reform of our food safety laws in more than 70 years. The goal, to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it, is certainly worthwhile, and the public health imperative is strong, but the comprehensive overhaul brought a lot of confusion up and down the food supply chain. Compliance deadlines began to go into effect in 2016.

Lakeside Container in Plattsburgh makes a variety of packaging products, some of which are food related. When the FSMA regulations began rolling out their clients began sending in all kinds of different legal forms they wanted signed; there didn’t seem to be a standard of compliance, and the different requirements were taking a lot of time to sort out. “We were getting numerous compliance requests from our food related customers on how we were going to comply with the new FSMA regulations. We are part of their supply chain, but documents being requested were not consistent, said George Bouyea, Lakeside Container General Manager. “Lakeside Container needed some clarification on how to comply with the new FSMA regulations for the products and services that we were providing to our customers.”

CITEC business advisor Kate Chepeleff is a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual who is also FSSC 22000 auditor qualified, which means she has studied and understands the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization act for all the facilities who need to register including any facility that manufactures, process, packs, or holds food for human or animal consumption in the United States.

At Lakeside Container Kate was able to assess the facility, do an audit, make recommendations and generate a food safety plan, as well as provide a summary letter of that food safety plan. The plan includes hazard analysis, preventive controls, management and monitoring of hazards, corrective actions, and verification that controls are working. This food safety plan is the standard of compliance that satisfies Lakeside’s clients up and down the food chain.

“I like to ensure that the work I do accomplishes the job in the most straight-forward and cost-effective way,” says Kate. A tall order when dealing with new and/or complicated government regulations, but when it’s done correctly, it’s a win.
