Cyber security industry standards and requirements don't seem that important—until they are. Even if your industry does not (yet) have requirements, it is vital that you keep your systems running and your data safe.
You may not currently be working with the Department of Defense (DoD), but you may want to in the future, and/or someone in your supply chain may be working wtih the DoD. In which case, you will be required to meet certain cyber security standards. But even if you never work with the DoD, the standards they use can provide good frameworks for evaluating and shoring up your cyber defenses.
